About Me

Who Am I?

Hi I'm Miel Verkerken. In the summer of 2018, I graduated as Master of Science in Information Engineering Technology at Ghent University after an exchange at Uppsala University, Sweden. This experience has broadened my horizon and triggered me to complete an international traineeship at the IT Class of ING. During this year I’ve learned a lot of hard as well as soft skills. Gaining professional experience as DevOps, Data Scientist, Site Reliability Engineer and Data Engineer in a challenging but supportive environment. Currently, I am enrolled at Ghent University as a Teaching Assistant combined with a Ph.D. research within the field of cyber-security. I would describe myself as a positive, determined and motivated team player, that isn’t afraid of getting out of his comfort zone. Looking forward to help creating a better world with innovative technologies.

Ghent University

2019 - ..

After 1 year of professional experience I went back to the academia to pursue a Ph.D. in Information Engineering Technology at the Internet Technology and Data Science Lab (IDLab) in collaboration with imec. The focus of the research is network intrusion detection (NIDS) within the field of cyber-security and applied machine learning.

Uppsala University

Spring 2018

My last semester before graduating I followed at Uppsala University. Here I wrote my master thesis, "Monitoring Financial Transactions: Efficient Algorithms for Streaming Data", regarding real-time fraud detection on financial transactions. For the course "Global Software Development" I did an international project with students from Uppsala (Sweden), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Turku (Finland).

Ghent University

2017 - 2018

After my bachelor I immediatly enrolled in the continuing 1-year master Information Engineering Technology at Ghent University. The first semester I followed all the compulsory courses in Ghent. The second semester I went on an Erasmus+ exhange to Sweden. There I wrote my master thesis and followed a few courses I could pick myself. At the age of 21, I graduated cum-laude as an engineer.

Ghent University

2014 - 2017

The year I became 18, I started Engineering School at Ghent University. The first year I didn't have to choose a major as all engineering students have a common year with courses like mathematics, physics, chemistry, electricity, mechanics,.. The next year I picked Information Engineering Technology as my major. After 3 years I finished the bachelor cum-laude.

Don Boscocollege Zwijnaarde

2008 - 2014

I completed my secondary education at Don Boscocollege Zwijnaarde. The Belgian system works in cycles of 2 years. The first cycle I started with Latin, this was a good challenge for me as studying languages is not my cup of tea. The second cycle I switched to science and in the last cycle I followed science-mathematics. Here I discovered my logical mind and my passion for exact sciences.
